Debit Mastercard

Introducing Debit Mastercard®

The convenience of a debit card, plus the flexibility of a credit card.

The SCU Debit Mastercard is a simple, safe way to access your accounts and money. It offers all the benefits of a traditional debit card, allowing you to complete transactions at any point-of-sale or ATM featuring the Interac® logo. It can also be used at participating online retailers in Canada and, internationally, anywhere Mastercard is accepted – at retailers and online. Every purchase made with your SCU Debit Mastercard is made with the funds you already have in your SCU account, so there is no credit card debt to manage or repay.

Once the total contactless spend limit of $250 in consecutive purchases is reached, the next purchase must be made by inserting the card into the payment terminal and using the PIN.

Currently, some Canadian online merchants do not yet accept Debit Mastercard, but your card can be used with any international merchant that accepts Mastercard transactions. Please check the merchant’s website to confirm the accepted payment methods. If you attempt to use your card on a Canadian site that doesn’t accept Debit Mastercard, your transaction will be declined. View the list of Canadian merchants accepting Debit Mastercard.

When you make an online or international purchase with your Debit Mastercard, a temporary hold for the amount of your transaction is placed on your account. The transaction will not be posted through your account until it is processed by the merchant. The timing of the processing of purchases can vary by merchant. Once the transaction is processed, the hold will be removed.

To view the holds on your account, login to online banking, or the mobile app. Select the account then expand the Account Details section at the top of the transaction history to view the holds and your available balance (your current balance minus the holds).

Some merchants take longer to process payments than others, so you may see some transactions posted to your account quicker than others, even if they were performed on the same day. Some merchants may not process payments until your purchase is shipped.

If you cancel an order shortly after making the purchase, a hold may remain on the account for several days until the merchant processes the cancellation of payment.

Refund transactions may take up to seven days to be credited to your account. The speed of your refund depends on how quickly the merchant you purchased the item from processes the return.

Many hotels and car rental locations will accept Debit Mastercard. It is best to check with the specific hotel/merchant on which payment types they accept. Please note that when making reservations, the merchant may put a hold on your account to guarantee your reservation. The hold may be placed at the time of booking or upon check-in and may include the room fee plus estimated incidentals. The hold may not be released for 72 hours or longer from the date of check-out. This varies by hotel/merchant so it is best to check with your specific hotel/merchant.
